Q1. How do I determine which colour product and shade are right for me?

A. Clairol has a range of colouring products - one of them will be just right for you. Call the Clairol Expert colour Consultants at 1-800-CLAIROL for a free hair colour consultation. Get colouring recommendations and hair care advice from our specialists.

Q2. Should individuals with natural, uncoloured hair use different hair colour products than those who have previously coloured their hair?

A. It depends on the desired result. If you are colouring your hair for the first time and only want to enhance your natural colour, try a Demi-Permanent (Level 2) product within 1-2 shades of your natural hair colour. If you want to go lighter or have a lot of grey hair, then refer to the insert that comes inside your box of Clairol hair colour and follow the instructions for first time application.

Q3. Should people who want to cover grey hair use different colouring products than those who don't need coverage?

A. All Clairol hair colour products will blend or cover grey hair to some degree. From a small percentage of grey up to 50% use a Demi-Permanent (Level 2) product, such as Natural Instincts, which will blend away grey hair.

On the other hand, if you have a lot of grey and want to cover it completely, use a Permanent (Level 3) product.

Q4. How do I dramatically lighten my hair?

A. your natural hair colour is a light brown or lighter, you can use a Permanent (Level 3) hair colour in a high-lift blonde shade to get a dramatic looking blonde.

If your natural hair colour is medium brown or darker, and you want to be a blonde, you will have to use double-process blonding.

Another option is highlighting. Clairol highlighting products create natural-looking highlights on selected strands of hair. The look can be bold and dramatic or soft and subtle.

If you have already coloured your hair and want to achieve a much lighter shade, or want to go back to your natural hair colour, you may want to get personal hair advice straight from Clairol Expert Colour Consultants at 1-800-CLAIROL (1-800-252-4765).

Q5. How can I test-run a colour before committing to colouring my entire head of hair?

A. A strand test is a simple method for you to test hair colour on a portion of your hair before doing the entire application. (The instructions are in your hair colour box.) It's an important step because it's the only way to see exactly how the shade you selected works with your starting hair colour to achieve the resulting colour. A strand test will also help you determine the exact timing you'll need to colour your whole head.
